Equality Michigan

Equality Michigan (EQMI) Education Fund is Michigan's comprehensive advocacy and support organization dedicated to advancing LGBTQ+ rights and safety across the state. Based in Kalamazoo, MI, EQMI provides education, victim services, and outreach programs designed to empower LGBTQ+ neighbors to live safely and authentically. The organization operates through four strategic pillars: Policy advocacy to defend civil rights and advance pro-LGBTQ legislation at the state and local levels; People-focused initiatives to elevate LGBTQ leaders into positions of influence and support pro-equality candidates; Power-building efforts that identify, train, and support LGBTQ community groups throughout Michigan; and Protect services that serve victims of anti-LGBTQ bias, violence, harassment, discrimination, and hate crimes, with specialized support for vulnerable transgender communities. EQMI's current priorities include amending the Elliott Larsen Civil Rights Act to include LGBTQ protections in housing, education, employment, and public accommodations; advancing pro-LGBTQ human rights ordinances in targeted jurisdictions; defending against religious exemption bills that sanction discrimination; and increasing transgender health and safety through improved healthcare access and anti-violence policies. The organization has been serving Michigan's LGBTQ and HIV-affected communities for over 20 years, strategically partnering with local, state, and national organizations to address critical issues impacting the LGBTQ and same gender loving communities throughout the state.
