About The Audre Lorde Project
The Audre Lorde Project is a community organizing center dedicated to mobilizing, educating, and building capacity within Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Two-Spirit, Trans, and Gender Non-Conforming (LGBTSTGNC) People of Color communities across Brooklyn, NY and the greater New York City area. Through strategic community organizing, advocacy, and resource development, the organization addresses the multiple interconnected issues impacting LGBTSTGNC People of Color, working toward progressive social and economic justice. The Audre Lorde Project provides comprehensive support services including housing resources, know-your-rights education, and organizing opportunities designed to strengthen community wellness and resilience. Founded in 1994 by a coalition of LGBTSTGNC People of Color and initially brought together by Advocates for Gay Men of Color, the organization has grown into a vital hub for community empowerment. Located in Fort Greene, Brooklyn since 1996, the Audre Lorde Project operates from a foundation of anti-racist, anti-sexist practice committed to multi-racial coalition-building. The organization prioritizes culturally specific and effective programming that reflects the actual needs and expertise of the communities served, recognizing that LGBTSTGNC people of color possess the competent skills and knowledge necessary to lead their own liberation. By supporting emerging and existing LGBTSTGNC People of Color organizations and cultural workers, the Audre Lorde Project amplifies diverse voices and strengthens the broader movement for equality and justice.
